Job Vacancy Monitoring Programme

The Department of Labour is no longer publishing the monthly Job Vacancy Monitoring (JVM) figures.

The Job Vacancy Monitor Report (December 2007), is still available,  HTML | PDF [6 pages, 59kB]

Work is currently underway to develop a new online job vacancy index. This index will provide an indicator of skill demand. It is expected that this product will be released in the second half of 2009.

Over the past year we have reviewed the JVM series and gathered advice on how we could collect job advertisement data. In April 2009 the Department made the decision to replace the JVM series with a new online job vacancy index that will not include newspaper advertising. The reasons for this decision are:

  • The proportion of job vacancies advertised in newspapers has declined even further since we last updated you, and the benefits no longer justify the high cost of collecting this data;
  • We have had breakthroughs in technology for gathering and analysing data from online job advertisements;

The move to an online job vacancy index is consistent with the new approach taken by Australia's Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations, with whom we are working in partnership to ensure that methods and products from both countries are consistent.
